Airport operates under temporary tank permit; director says crash-barrier upgrades required for permanent approval

The airport director told the board Aug. 12 that the facility is operating a tank under a temporary permit that allows testing but remains subject to final sign-off by the state corporation commission.
The director said the commission has required perimeter safety improvements — essentially bollards or crash barriers — as part of the upgrade process. Staff described the additional requirement as unexpected and said they had not been informed of the new conditions earlier by their contractor.
The director said staff are obtaining quotes for permanent bollards and that temporary barriers could be in place by the end of the week to allow continued operations. He described the temporary devices as functional but not the long-term solution the airport prefers.
No formal board action was taken; staff will return when permanent barrier plans and costs are available.
