Superintendent says strategic plan will guide Green River Schools; board schedules workshop

Superintendent Dr. Cooper told the Green River School District Board of Trustees that the districtstrategic plan is a "very valuable document" and should guide school- and department-level decisions across the year. At the board meeting, trustees agreed to schedule a workshop before the September board meeting to review sections of the plan in more depth.
The strategic plan matters because, Dr. Cooper said, it focuses work across three pillarswellness and safety, academics and communication and collaborationand helps the district decide which proposals should receive funding. "One of the first questions I have is how does it relate to our strategic plan?" Dr. Cooper said, urging staff and board members to use the plan when evaluating new initiatives.
Board members said the July retreat, which included a presentation from Rod Kessler of the Wyoming School Board Association, prompted useful discussion and helped the newly seated board develop shared goals. Trustee comments at the meeting emphasized the planand the retreatprovided a foundation for the districtleadership and board to align priorities going into the school year.
The board asked staff to schedule a half-hour workshop beginning at 5 p.m. on Sept. 9 to review sections of the plan; trustees said they might extend the session if a deeper dive proved necessary. The districtwebsite is being updated to make the plan easier to find and to encourage principals, staff and community members to reference it when drafting goals.
Separately, Dr. Cooper told the board the district received its annual accreditation notice from the State Department and is entering a five-year peer review process that will include interviews and document review. He said the peer review visit is expected in the fall and that the board will be notified of opportunities to participate. A summary report should follow the site visit, with a fuller report expected later in the fall.
The board approved its annual calendar by motion during the meeting, confirming regular meetings will be held on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m., with the exception of the third Tuesday in July. The motion carried by voice vote.
