District renews New Paths partnership with Harrisburg University; grant covers tuition for first cohort

The Susquehanna Township School District on Aug. 4 discussed returning a Harrisburg University New Paths partnership that provides vocational and technical coursework for district learners. Administrators said the inaugural New Paths year (2023–24) was successful and that the university and partners will offer business‑technology and computer‑focused programming — including cybersecurity, information systems and related certifications — targeted mainly at upperclassmen. “They’re offering the program at no cost for the first 15 students, and the value of it is a $105,000 tuition value,” a district presenter said. The district said funding for the first cohort is covered through a grant; if additional students enroll beyond the initial 15, the district would pay $7,000 per additional student to expand capacity up to the grant’s tuition value. Administrators said participating students can earn certifications and, in some cases, college credit that could transfer to degree programs. The program also includes internship opportunities and pathways to apprenticeships or further study. Administrators said the program is primarily for grades 11 and 12 and that Harrisburg University and other partners will provide equipment and instructors; the district will supply classroom space and a staff adviser. The district will publicize the opportunity at back‑to‑school events and invite families to discussion tables at open houses. Board members asked about capacity and outcomes; administrators said the program has yielded multiple certifications for participating students and that additional outreach will be scheduled to ensure families are aware of the opportunity.
