Bedford County authorized to participate in Purdue/Sackler opioid settlement

The Bedford County Board of Supervisors authorized the county attorney to participate in a nationwide settlement tied to Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family as part of broader opioid litigation.
The county attorney told the board this is the fifth settlement the county is joining in relation to the nationwide opioid crisis and that the bankruptcy court’s earlier decision had altered prior settlement expectations. He said an allocation to Bedford County has not yet been determined but that Virginia’s share of the settlement is $103 million. The attorney noted staff is working with a consultant to help determine how funds would best be spent; the consultant and staff will meet later this month to begin that planning.
A motion to adopt Resolution R081125-06 to authorize participation in the settlement carried on a roll call vote.
The board took no further action beyond authorizing participation; staff will report back when Bedford County’s allocation and recommended uses are available.
