Sheriff secures state Operation Ceasefire grant to buy 3D scanners, fingerprint device

The Bedford County Board of Supervisors authorized county staff to execute a contract with Leica Geosystems to purchase 3D laser scanners and a fingerprint scanner for the Sheriff’s Office using a grant from the Virginia Attorney General’s Operation Ceasefire program.
Sheriff Miller told the board the package includes a handheld 3D scanner and a tripod-mounted 3D scanner to improve crime-scene processing; two laser scanners were listed at $146,870 and a fingerprint scanner at $3,130. He said the grant’s intent is to support technology that helps prevent violent crime in Virginia and that the award carries no local match requirement.
A motion to adopt Resolution R081125-05 to accept the grant and authorize contract execution carried on a roll call vote. Sheriff Miller said the equipment will help investigators “process crime scenes in the most efficient way.”
Staff will execute the contract and implement the equipment purchases consistent with grant terms; the board recorded no further questions.
