Local trainers run hands-on emergency preparedness classes for people with developmental disabilities

Pierce Jones and Associates presented an update on emergency-preparedness training tailored for people with developmental disabilities, with additional sessions planned in Forks, Sequim and Port Angeles. Randy Jones described exercises the team uses to familiarize participants with emergency supplies and procedures, including a hands-on "hot potato" exercise and a shelter-in-place tent setup so participants can touch, open and practice with items they would use in a real event. The trainings use systematic instruction and supply a personal backpack or shelter-in-place bag that participants take home after the class. Jones said the program coordinates with local emergency management, paratransit, Project Safer, law enforcement and fire departments; depending on the class, fire or emergency personnel bring equipment such as a fire truck or fire extinguishers for supervised, hands-on practice. The trainers said the classes also cover reverse-9-1-1 notices, when to shelter in place versus evacuate, and how to use 9-1-1. Participants complete a needs-assessment inventory and practice packing a compact, personal bag appropriate for bus or shelter transport. Jones said recent sessions included demonstrations and graduation where students leave with a fully stocked personal emergency bag funded by county resources. The trainers said a final round of classes will be delivered locally and that sign-ups are open for people interested in attending.
