County staff: fairgrounds near break‑even on operations but capital costs remain unfunded
Summary
County staff told commissioners the fairgrounds generate about $500,000 in annual revenue and cost roughly $600,000 to operate, making operations close to breakeven; commissioners and the public discussed the difficulty of funding capital repairs for aging buildings.

A member of the public asked whether the county fair generates net revenue. County staff provided preliminary 2026 budget figures showing near break‑even operations but a funding gap for long‑term capital needs.
“...the fairgrounds, the entire fairgrounds, generates a little over a half a million dollars a year in revenue,” a staff member said during the reports section. “And it costs us approximately, $600,000 in total, costs relating to maintaining the fairgrounds, and obviously our operating costs relating to the fair itself. And so, we are very close to breakeven, from an operating and maintenance perspective.”
Why it matters: The county uses the fairgrounds for multiple revenue streams (the annual fair, off‑season storage and rentals), but aging buildings require capital outlays that current operational revenue does not fully cover. Staff said replacement and major repairs are the funding challenge rather than day‑to‑day operations.
Taper: No new capital appropriation was proposed at the meeting; staff framed the issue as a long‑term capital planning challenge for the parks and facilities department.
