Sheriff highlights arrests by MET team, pushes animal-shelter RFP and plans street-crimes unit

Mariposa County's sheriff and deputies briefed the Board of Supervisors on public-safety operations, animal-control capacity and recruitment at the Aug. 5 meeting. Sheriff Jeremy Breeze (presenting) said the county's MET (multi-enforcement team) conducted investigations that led to out-of-county arrests and seizures; Board members praised the team's quick action in North County, where stolen property was recovered and suspects were taken into custody. The sheriff credited interagency partners for assistance on some cases. On animal services, Breeze said the Sheriffs Foundation and other partners have raised funds (about $10,000 noted) to support spay/neuter and foster care programs. He said a county RFP for contracted shelter capacity is due Aug. 15; the county remains open to proposals from providers that can accept smaller numbers of animals on a recurring basis. Breeze said the goal is to expand safe placements and reduce euthanasia when intake surges exceed local foster capacity. Breeze also reported staffing gains: several deputies completing training, others in the academy and an upcoming ceremonial swearing-in. He said the office plans to develop a proactive street-crimes/drug team to focus on theft, illegal drugs and related crimes, and that the MET teams investigative work will be a model for proactive enforcement. Supervisors and staff asked for contact information to volunteer for senior "brown bag" distribution (a senior food box program) and thanked the sheriffs office for its community work. No formal board action was required beyond recognizing informational updates.
