Board approves applications for two CAL FIRE prevention grants, including green-waste vouchers and park fuel reduction work

The Inyo County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 5 approved staff's plan to submit two applications for the CAL FIRE Wildfire Prevention Grant: one to expand green-waste disposal support and another to fund fuel reduction at county parks and campgrounds. Kristen Feiler, the county's wildfire coordinator, told supervisors, "Before you today, we have the CAL FIRE Prevention Grant, for which Inyo County is proposing to submit 2 applications," and that the applications were due the next day.
Feiler described a green-waste voucher program to supplement existing quarterly green-waste days and to pair with Firewise and FireSafe Council community cleanups. "They're gonna stay existing. They're quarterly, one weekend every quarter," she said, describing the intent to use vouchers and dumpster rentals to expand capacity.
The second application targets fuel reduction at county parks and campgrounds and will coordinate with a separate riparian-focused initiative that requires additional CEQA permitting and exemptions. Feiler said those riparian projects require extra environmental review and will be paired with the parks work as appropriate.
Supervisors asked whether recent trailer-bill changes affected the grant dynamics; Feiler said she had not yet reviewed those changes and would follow up. The board voted and the motion to approve submitting the applications carried.
Feiler also described coordination with community groups and noted that Whitebark Institute is partnering on other riparian projects (discussed separately). The approvals allow staff to finalize and submit the CAL FIRE grant applications on the established deadline.
