County declares surplus transit buses and four sheriff vehicles to be removed from fleet

Transit: Mary (county staff) reported that the transit department received new buses through an Illinois Department of Transportation grant and asked the board to declare two older buses (vehicle numbers 5 and 16) surplus so the department could pursue disposition. Mary said the two buses have more than 200,000 miles each and estimated resale values as follows: bus 5 at $1,500–$2,500 and bus 16 at $2,500–$3,500. The board approved declaring the vehicles surplus and staff said they would seek the best return — including sale to the highest bidder or donation to an entity that could use them — consistent with grant and department rules.
Sheriff: The Sheriff’s Department requested four vehicles be declared surplus as part of its routine vehicle‑replacement plan. The board approved declaring those four vehicles surplus; county staff said vehicles in varying condition are either returned to the county pool for departmental use, donated where appropriate, or auctioned depending on inspection results.
Board discussion noted that final disposition and revenue returned to county funds would follow normal surplus‑property procedures and any sale proceeds would be addressed according to grant conditions and county policy.
