The Connon C USD 464 Board of Education voted 7-0 July 14 to approve a bid to install air conditioning in the Tonganoxie High School automotive technology shop, a project district staff described as urgent to complete before students return. District staff presented an action item calling for just over $31,000 to install 2.05-ton split, ducted cooling units dedicated to the auto shop and controlled by a local thermostat. The presenter said the systems are intended to address immediate cooling needs and would not preclude future conditioning of the other CTE spaces in the building. “We really do need to see that try to get done before the beginning of school,” Mister Loomis said during his presentation on summer projects. Board members asked practical questions about operations, including how to ensure staff do not prop overhead doors open while the air conditioning runs. Staff said the system will be tied to a wall thermostat dedicated to the shop and that responsibility to keep doors closed would rest with shop staff. The formal motion to approve the AutoTech HVAC (action item 5.2) was made and seconded and recorded by the clerk as “motion carries 7 0.”
