The Holmdel Township Board of Education on the evening of its recognition meeting amended a proposed job description for a part‑time seasonal board office support position to specify the role is for “high school senior / rising senior or college student in the first two years of study,” after Patty DeCero, president of HCA, said the posted description appeared to duplicate secretarial work covered by the district’s contract.
The amendment followed a public comment by DeCero, who told the board, “I don't have a problem with the job being put in there, but it needs to be recognized that this is work that already is being done by secretarial units. That is part of our agreement, so they just have to be paid that rate.” Board members and staff responded that the intent was to create a short‑term student position to provide experience in business office workflows, not to replace existing secretarial positions.
Board members said the item was time‑sensitive because the district currently lacks an assistant business administrator and wanted to preserve the option to hire student help over the summer. President DeMare announced a resolution to amend agenda item 40 to add the eligibility language: “high school senior / rising senior or college student in the first 2 years of study.” The motion to amend was moved by President DeMare and seconded; the roll call vote on the amendment was recorded as unanimous in favor (see vote record below). After the amendment was added, the item was included in the consent/action vote block later in the meeting.
Board discussion also included a request from the union representative for advance courtesy notification when job descriptions affecting bargaining‑unit work are brought to the agenda. District staff acknowledged the oversight in communication and said language clarifying the role as a student position would be added to the job description before final appointment.
The amendment is a formal direction to staff to revise the job description to include the student‑eligibility sentence; the board recorded the amendment and approved the amended item in the meeting’s action items.
