Board discusses esports career-exploration grant for middle schools

District staff briefed the board at the Jan. 21 workshop on a middle-school esports and industry career-exploration grant opportunity and described related local planning. The proposed program targets grades five through eight and would expand computer-science and career pathways work already underway in the district. District staff said the program team has done walkthroughs with prospective partners and is preparing an application. Mr. Novak, who led the presentation and planning remarks, said the district had developed a multi-year plan that could proceed even without the grant, but that “winning this grant would just be able to take our, you know, 5 year plan and and make it a 1 year plan.” Board members praised the grant planning and noted the program’s potential to engage students who may be underrepresented in other activities. The proposal was compared to earlier district work on computer science and cybersecurity grants that helped expand course offerings and extracurricular pathways. Administrators said the grant is focused on middle-school students and that, with or without external funding, district staff plan phased implementation. No award decision was made during the workshop; the presentation was informational and intended to solicit board support and to inform upcoming budget and grant work.
