Resident raises health, safety and public‑input concerns about USEC site redevelopment during public comment

During the public‑comment period on Aug. 12, resident Bonnie Kobalitz said she lives about two miles from a redevelopment project at the former USEC site and expressed concern that there had been no public input opportunities for that project in her neighborhood. Kobalitz said the site has a history of contamination and worker illness and that residents are worried about health, safety, water use and the speed of the project, which she said had held a groundbreaking the previous Friday.
Mayor and staff responded that the reindustrialization effort at the site had been under discussion for years, that much of the recent activity was driven by federal action and moved quickly, and that staff expected additional public engagement. The mayor said he appreciated the comments and that the city would “see how things roll out.”
The city did not record any specific municipal action on the USEC project at the meeting; the comment was received and entered into the record.
