The Energy and Technology Confirmation Committee voted unanimously to favorably recommend Paul Borub to the full Senate as a member of the Transportation Commission representing Region 1 counties in northern Utah.
Paul Borup, a Logan resident and former member of the Cache County Council, told the committee he expects to represent Region 1’s interests while weighing statewide transportation priorities. "I think transportation really is unquestionably the role of government," Borup said, adding that "there's only trade offs, and being able to make those trade offs and make those hard decisions is something that this commission does as well." He told the committee he has a degree in economics from Utah State University and has worked in financial roles in the insurance industry.
The committee heard endorsements and brief discussion before the vote. Leif Elder, a representative from the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), said the department supports the appointment: "We are, supportive of this, appointment and and appreciate, mister Burrup's kind of recognition of the transportation," Elder said. Senator Wilson praised Borup's experience on the Cache County Council and his attention to budgets and intercounty coordination during the committee exchange.
Committee members asked no substantive follow-up questions after Borup’s presentation. Senator Wilson moved that the committee favorably recommend Borup to the full Senate; the motion carried unanimously. The committee also approved the meeting minutes from June 3 by unanimous voice vote and later adjourned by unanimous motion.
Borup told the committee he worked on regional transportation prioritization while on the Cache County Council and on the Bear River Association of Governments, and described one example working with UDOT on an intersection improvement on Highway 89 into Logan. He said those experiences shaped his view of weighing competing projects and budgets across jurisdictions.
The committee’s favorable recommendation sends the nomination to the full Senate for final consideration. No date for a full-Senate vote was announced during the meeting.
