Committee sends Steve Miller nomination for University of Utah trustee to full Senate

The Senate Education Committee on Thursday recommended Steve Miller for appointment to the University of Utah Board of Trustees and forwarded his nomination to the full Senate. Miller, who described himself as a lifelong Utah resident and a University of Utah alumnus, said he would bring a stewardship and governance approach that emphasizes evidence‑based decision making, collaboration and support for the university’s academic mission. He described the role of a trustee as governance rather than micromanagement and said he would work to be an advocate for students, partner with faculty and support institutional leadership. Committee members asked how Miller would guard against politicized decision making and preserve faculty autonomy. Miller said he relies on research and multiple perspectives, and that he will defer to expertise where appropriate while remaining focused on the institution’s mission. He also said he expects to help the university navigate several “headwinds,” including cost pressures, shifting workforce demands and issues tied to athletics and name-image-and-likeness policies. The committee moved and recorded a unanimous voice vote to forward Miller’s nomination to the full Senate with a favorable recommendation. The recommendation does not constitute final appointment; the full Senate must confirm the nomination.
