Laura Lyons presented the item and said the Family and Consumer Sciences teachers reviewed textbooks and selected a high-school version of On Baking — an 825-page text aligned to Kansas competencies for baking and pastry — rather than a 1,100-page culinary-institute text. Lyons said the selected high-school edition is used in local postsecondary programming as preparation for students who may continue into culinary studies.
Lyons told the board that nearly 100 students requested the course and the district will be able to accommodate the majority of those students this year. A board member moved to advance the item from discussion to action to allow staff to proceed; the board then approved the adoption and purchase.
The board recorded the vote as unanimous. The district will deploy the classroom sets and student licenses over the coming school year.
