USD 437 owner’s representative reports site delays at Indian Hills; other projects near completion

An owner’s representative updated the USD 437 Board of Education on multiple school construction and renovation projects, saying most are close to completion but that recent rain and permitting steps have delayed work on the Indian Hills addition.
The representative, Tucker, told the board, “Summer’s almost over. Right? You guys can have our kids back.” He said Washington Roll North has cleared a fire marshal walk and the district is waiting on “a certification of the retention ponds with the city,” adding, “We have to, do a survey of as built and make sure everything matches up with the grades.”
Why it matters: several projects are on the district’s critical path for the start of the school year. Delays to site work, inspections or utilities can constrain which rooms are available for teachers and students when school begins.
Most projects are on track. Tucker said Washburn Rural Middle School (WRMS) “looks really good,” with storefronts in and interior finishes approaching completion. He said Farley’s renovation is largely finished aside from painting, toilet accessories, marker boards and HVAC/electrical trim. Jay Shidler also is “looking good,” with crews managing sequencing and occupancy logistics.
Indian Hills is the chief concern. Tucker said the south addition is “1 to 2 weeks behind” schedule, and the team has submitted an alternate plan to the fire marshal so the school can still open while a limited set of fire barriers are installed. He said two new addition classrooms intended for music and art are not yet ready and that interim collaboration spaces are being used to house those programs if needed. “They had a ton of people there working,” Tucker said, but “rain, obviously, doesn’t help.”
District staff said drawings are progressing for the remaining three schools and that the district will conduct a financial checkup at the end of the summer to review contingencies and planning for possible follow-up projects in 2027.
Board members asked about timing for teacher and student return. A staff member said the first contract day for teachers is Tuesday, Aug. 5, and students begin Tuesday, Aug. 12. Tucker and staff emphasized that even when parts of buildings are under construction, “parts of the building will be open” and the district will control entrances and access.
The owner’s representative said they are meeting weekly on Indian Hills and other renovation projects to track progress and sequencing. No formal board action on the projects was taken during the meeting.
Ending: District staff said they will return to the board in the fall with the financial checkup and any follow-up recommendations related to contingencies or sequencing decisions.
