Board recognizes state champions: girls soccer and boys track relay

The Auburn-Washburn Board of Education on June 11 recognized student-athletes for state championships in two sports, honoring the Washburn Rural High School girls soccer team and the boys 4x400 relay squad.
Coach Hensel and members of the girls soccer team described a 19-2 season that culminated in a 0-0 championship match resolved by a penalty-kick shootout. The board and Kansas Sen. Brenda Dietrich presented framed tributes and individual mementos to players and coaches following the presentation.
Separately, coach Keith Wetzel and coach Sigvaldsson joined four relay members — seniors Matthew Hauser and Isaiah Terry and juniors Drayden Chitrin and Liam Morrison — to mark a repeat state championship in the boys 4x400 relay. The team ran 3:16.23 at the state meet, breaking an 11-year-old state record and resetting a school record that had stood since 1985. Isaiah Terry also won the 400-meter state title in 47.92, and Liam Morrison won the 300-meter hurdles in 37.68; both performances were presented as school and state champion results.
Speakers and board members praised the student-athletes’ work ethic and community support. The board indicated gratitude and presented tributes from the Kansas Senate to the teams and to individual state champions.
