Board meets therapy dog at Pauline Central; first reading scheduled for consent

The Auburn-Washburn Board of Education on June 11 introduced Winnie, an 11-year-old certified goldendoodle proposed to join the Pauline Central Early Childhood team as a therapy dog and held a first reading of the recommendation.
District staff arranged a brief in-person introduction so board members could meet the dog and the handler before the formal recommendation appears on a future consent agenda. Lana Seibel, a speech-language pathologist at Pauline Central, told the board Winnie has 10 years of experience as a therapy dog, is a Canine Good Citizen, and is certified through Loving Paws Therapy Organization in Lawrence. Principal Debbie Williams said the school supports adding Winnie to the Pauline Central team.
Board members asked questions about current practice at Pauline Central and whether another therapy dog already serves the building; staff replied there is not currently a therapy dog at Pauline Central. A board member suggested placing the item on next week’s consent agenda; no formal vote on the dog was taken at the June 11 meeting.
The district packet will include a list of other therapy dogs in the district for board review, and staff said the formal approval item will appear on an upcoming agenda for final action.
