The Wichita Board of Education on July 7 approved a change order to the district’s on‑call general contractor contract to complete a remodel of the AMAC boardroom and to reconfigure the mezzanine, voting 6–1.
Board member Stan moved to approve the additional $100,000; Diane Albert seconded. The motion passed with one dissenting vote from Julie, who said she supported the project but opposed using an on‑call contract line for a single, substantial project.
What the board approved
The change order supplements an existing on‑call contract that district staff used to accelerate summer work at the AMAC facility so the boardroom would be usable for meetings and professional development. Luke Newman, presenting for facilities, said the work was reoriented mid‑planning to improve safety, accessibility and audiovisual capability, and to enclose a mezzanine meeting space that had been open to the floor below. Those changes increased the project scope and required the additional funding.
“Ultimately … it improves accessibility, will allow this room to be used more days per week and gives us greater AV capacity for board and PD use,” Newman said.

Next steps
District staff said the project will continue under the on‑call contract and that the approved ceiling on the on‑call authorization will not be exceeded. Facilities staff will provide project updates to the board as work continues this summer.
