The Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education on July 15 approved a 3% salary-pool increase for classified staff and a separate 3% salary-pool for administrators as part of the district’s compensation planning.
What passed: The board approved a 3% increase "to the salary pool" for classified staff (approximate cost cited at $2,212,500) and then approved a separate 3% pool for administrative staff (approximate cost cited at $645,000). Staff described both items as additions to the pool of funds available for compensation adjustments; individual increases will be determined by placement in adopted ranges, equity considerations and applicable labor rules.
Board debate: Trustees discussed whether the administrative adjustments should have been phased in or accompanied by additional documentation after a reorganization. One trustee said the administrative pool "is not sustainable" and expressed opposition; others said the pool language reflected standard practice (funds held centrally and allocated according to range, experience and role). Supporters noted the classified pool was broadly needed. The motions were taken separately after a substitute motion to split the vote was approved.
Next steps: Human resources and finance will implement the pools consistent with district compensation policy, using established documentation and payroll procedures. Trustees asked staff to provide clarifying documentation about how the administrative pool will be allocated and to make sure any personnel actions comply with relevant labor and payroll rules.
