PSC grants numbering blocks to Teleport Communications after ND National Guard request

The North Dakota Public Service Commission on May 19 adopted an order in case PUD-25-174 granting Teleport Communications America LLC a 3,000-number block in the Bismarck rate center after the company supplied a customer request from the North Dakota National Guard.
Commissioners said the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) had denied Teleport’s original request for three consecutive 1,000-number blocks (701-994-6000 through -8999). Under Federal Communications Commission rules, a state commission may grant a waiver of NANPA’s denial when there is demonstrable, verifiable need. Teleport submitted a customer request from the North Dakota National Guard, and the commission found that submission an appropriate basis to approve the numbering resources.
Commission members praised public utility staff work to preserve North Dakota’s 701 area code and singled out staffer Jerry Schmaltz for leading the commission’s efforts on numbering requests. The chair noted that previous conservation efforts and voluntary number returns had pushed projected exhaustion of the 701 area code farther into the future.
The commission recorded the order as adopted by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
