Administrators explained the Bowman Book Program originally paid for Scholastic book-fair purchases for students who could not afford them. Because the buildings have stopped hosting the Scholastic fairs, staff asked to expand the fund's permitted uses to support the same population with other needs that prevent learning or participation. The board approved that expansion as part of the consent package (items a through r).
Separately, staff described an "Unplug and Play" initiative at Bowman that incentivizes children to spend less time on devices; community donors and local businesses contributed money for prizes and programming. The board created a separate fund to track those donations and expenditures going forward.
Both actions were approved as part of the financial consent items and carried by unanimous roll call. Staff said building principals will propose how to use the expanded Bowman fund and the Unplug and Play fund will be tracked separately in the district accounting system.
