Manteno shortens Sunday alcohol sales window to 9 a.m.; mayor breaks tie

Trustee Vaughn noted other communities in the county had earlier hours and framed the change as a competitive measure for local retailers and restaurants.
Opponents said earlier hours could stress public-safety resources and conflict with community institutions. Trustee Crockett asked rhetorically whether local pastors would approve the earlier start, saying, “Would pastor Worley like to have us drinking at 09:00? I don't think so,” and raised concerns about where the board would draw the line on incremental changes.
The ordinance passed after roll call produced a tie among trustees (Yes: Barry, Vaughn, Boudreaux; No: Crockett, Getzke, Zimbelman). The mayor cast the tie-breaking vote in favor. No effective date beyond the passage at the meeting was specified; trustees said the change will be reflected in the municipal code and will permit licensed on-premises sales and the related gaming privileges to begin at 9 a.m. on Sundays.
Trustees discussed that certain license classes and special-use permits previously allowed earlier service for particular events; the ordinance generalizes the start time for Sunday sales and on-premises consumption. No formal implementation schedule or reporting requirements were set at the meeting.
