The Springfield Public Schools District 186 board adopted a resolution on Aug. 4 to file the district’s tentative budget for fiscal year 2026 and to publish it for public inspection, initiating the statutory budget process. The resolution directs the secretary to publish notice of availability and sets a public hearing for 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 15.
The superintendent and business staff clarified that the vote was not a final budget approval but the start of a month-to-six-week process leading to a final budget vote expected Sept. 15. The resolution references Section 17-1 of the School Code of Illinois as the statutory basis for preparing and publishing the tentative budget.
Business reports presented to the board included the district’s outstanding state payments of $169,526 as of July 29, 2025 — entirely due to special projects — and capital project cash roll‑forward details through June 30, 2025. The administration reported an investment beginning balance of $117,702,247.69 in capital projects, June revenues of $126,122.19 in interest/dividends, bond draws and expenses of $4,311,000.65 in the period, yielding an ending balance shown in board materials. The administration also noted upcoming bond payments totaling about $12.52 million across the next two bond payments and current CFST savings of $3,570,236.
Board members voted 6–0 in favor of the resolution. Administration staff said the tentative budget will be available for public inspection beginning Aug. 15 at the district office.
