Superintendent details board member’s death, large back-to-school event and facility updates

Superintendent announced the death of Scott McFarland, a long-serving former board member, and asked the board and community to observe a moment of silence. McFarland served on Subdistrict 3 from May 2011–May 2015 and again from May 2019–February 2021; he served as vice president (May 2019–May 2020) and president (May 2020–February 2021). The superintendent asked the community to keep McFarland’s wife Amber and the family in their thoughts.
The superintendent also recapped a large back-to-school community event at Fiat that drew more than 1,000 families and distributed about 1,000 book bags and school supplies. The event included about 85 vendor organizations and free food from local vendors named in the report, and the district thanked volunteers, first responders and elected officials who attended.
The board was given a schedule of upcoming family-facing events: a physicals clinic Aug. 6 at Matheny Withrow Elementary School (8:30 a.m.–noon) for Pre-K, kindergarten, sixth, ninth grade and new Illinois students; an immunization-only clinic at the Sangamon County Department of Public Health on Aug. 8; in-person registration continuing for middle and high school the following day; Freshman Forward transition events Aug. 7 at three high schools; and sixth-grade orientations Aug. 7 at each middle school starting at 8 a.m.
Facilities projects in progress were summarized: Du Bois replacement of a 45-year-old carpeted gym floor with a new athletic surface; Springfield High renovations creating a new band and choral wing and music commons; poured concrete on the Dewey gymnasium floor; and progress at Owen Marsh, where walls are rising around a storm shelter and the site is being fenced for continued construction.
Board members thanked staff and volunteers for the community event and noted the upcoming calendar items. The superintendent reminded the board that negotiations were ongoing and that the administration was managing fiscal constraints while preparing for the school year.
