Local volunteer launches regular senior and veteran education nights, organizes shoe drive for veterans

Barnes said she is organizing a recurring education event for seniors and veterans at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post. She told the council the sessions will be held every second Wednesday, with veteran participants attending free of charge and seniors charged $10. Barnes said the sessions will cover changes to Medicare and other health-care information that she said many seniors do not yet know.
Barnes also described a volunteer shoe drive she organized last year and plans to repeat at Christmas. She said the current shoe-drop locations include the VFW, Pecos Grilling Company, Tejas Chocolate and Barbecue, and Market Street Grill, and that the drive will distribute shoes to veterans in need; she invited anyone who knows of homeless veterans or others who need shoes to contact her.
Barnes requested community support for both the education events and the shoe drive; no council action was taken during the public-comment period, and her remarks were recorded as part of public comment.
