The Tahlequah City Council tabled discussion of replacing a yield sign with a stop sign at Jamestown Street and Joe Carroll Street and of adding a second stop sign on Jamestown Drive pending an engineering study. Planning and Development Director Paige Harjo said staff concluded the city lacks in‑house traffic engineering expertise and needs a professional firm to perform traffic counts and analysis before making signage changes that affect safety. Harjo said one firm gave an initial estimate of about $4,000, higher than the $1,000 she had expected, and staff were seeking additional quotes. “We just want to make sure that…an engineering firm actually do some backup documentation for us would be the best route to take before we make a decision,” Harjo said. Councilors voted to table the item and requested staff return with engineering recommendations and cost estimates; no signage changes or purchases were authorized at the meeting.
