Huntington East Middle School showcases PBIS program after national conference presentation

Cabell County school leaders recognized Huntington East Middle School on Aug. 5 after staff presented the school’s PBIS model at a national conference in Washington, D.C. Principal Don Pennington, academic coach Jessica (last name redacted), teacher of the year Tanisha Sturdivant and the school’s therapy dog, Bear, attended and described the school’s ABC approach — attendance, behavior and classwork — to educators from around the country.
Dr. Ashley Stevens introduced the team and said the district is “biased” but proud of Huntington East for being a statewide and national leader in PBIS. At the meeting, Pennington and staff said they shared a playbook of their practices with conference attendees and heard reports from other educators who planned to implement Huntington East’s procedures in their own schools.
Pennington and one staff member spoke about Bear, the school therapy dog, who drew attention from conference attendees; Pennington said the team received many questions and positive feedback. The district thanked the Huntington East team for representing the county and said it would celebrate the school’s accomplishments as the year begins.
