Human Relations Commission asks staff to recheck police arrests and citations data

Commission members at the Troy Human Relations Commission meeting on May 15, 2025 requested staff follow up on apparent inconsistencies in a police department report on arrests and citations. The commission asked that staff provide a five-month trend analysis so members can determine whether the recent data reflect an anomaly or a pattern. Commissioner Sonia noted that the numbers in the report did “look a little … not balanced” compared with earlier reports and asked whether staff had discussed the matter with the records contact. A commissioner added, “Did that happen or do I need to follow-up with him?” and staff confirmed that Sean McKinney was aware of the concern. Commissioner John Lewis said he would welcome the reports and asked staff to forward previously distributed data for review. Commission members agreed informally to review the last five months of data to look for trends; they discussed sharing historical reports by email and asked staff to forward any files that a commissioner may have missed. No formal motion to request a specific deliverable or deadline was made during the meeting. The commission’s next regular meeting was scheduled for Aug. 21, 2025, and members indicated they expect to review the requested reports ahead of that session.
