Cabarrus County commissioners reviewed a year‑end reappropriation package and asked staff about a large broadband line that originated during the COVID period. Staff said the broadband contracts were signed previously and the county is awaiting confirmation from the state on whether the county remains financially liable for the projects.
Finance staff and the county manager explained the reappropriation process and said this year's package is smaller than last year's by about $4 million. The broadband line was described as a carryover from efforts to expand broadband during the pandemic; county staff said if the state confirms the county is not liable, the local dollars would return to the county general fund and could be repurposed.
A commissioner requested that, if the funds become available, priority be given to the sheriff's office and public‑safety needs. Staff said they expect confirmation from the state within about six weeks and that any returned local dollars would remain in county control.
Commissioners moved the reappropriation discussion to the consent agenda for the regular meeting.
