Park maintenance reports large illegal-dump cleanup at Sim Park and ongoing winter projects

Parks maintenance supervisors told the Wichita Park and Recreation Board on April 1 that crews performed a large illegal-dump cleanup at Sim Park that removed nearly 170 tons of debris and required substantial staff time; the department said internal crews saved the city an estimated $81,000 versus contracting the work.
Russell, filling in for the forestry division update, and other maintenance supervisors described March activity across special-project crews and forestry: inspections, pruning, removals, playground repairs, sign replacements and equipment upgrades. Maintenance staff also reported fabrication of new polycarbonate posts for park furniture, repairs to the Watson Park train barn to house the park train and ongoing athletic-court assessments to prioritize capital improvements.
On the Sim Park cleanup, staff reported roughly 169.92 tons removed over multiple days using internal crews and roll-off dumpsters. The department summarized labor and material inputs and compared costs to outside contracting, estimating a savings of approximately $81,000 by using in-house crews. Staff said another large cleanup is being planned at a different park and stressed that frequent illegal dumping increases maintenance burdens.
Maintenance staff also reviewed typical seasonal tasks: irrigation system startups and backflow testing, athletic-field preparations, playground inspections and repairs, and replacement of facility signs. The board heard that several memorial benches and shelter repairs were scheduled and that crews continue to respond to emergency vegetation management calls after a windy March.
What’s next: maintenance crews will continue spring startup, complete scheduled memorial installations and prepare athletic fields and aquatic sites for the busy season; staff said they will plan further cleanups as needed.
