Kirksville authorizes radio-frequency sharing agreements to support mutual aid communications

The Kirksville City Council on Aug. 4 approved ordinances authorizing the mayor to execute radio-frequency sharing agreements with Macon County Enhanced 9‑1‑1 and the La Plata Community Fire Protection District.
City Manager Mary Maycomber said the agreements support automatic-aid responses approved by the council in December and are intended to ensure interoperable communications when Kirksville or partner agencies respond without waiting for a dispatch request. “Part of that, the probably the most important thing is the communications,” Maycomber said; the agreements allow agencies to use the partner’s licensed frequencies when responding to calls and to permit reciprocal use when needed.
The ordinances passed on first and second readings. No technical changes to frequencies or FCC licenses were made by the council; the documents authorize interagency use of existing licensed mobile and portable radio frequencies under mutually agreed terms.
