Kirksville re-applies for Missouri tree program to remove hazardous trees, expand planning

The Kirksville City Council on Aug. 4 approved a resolution authorizing staff to pursue the Missouri Department of Conservation Community Forest cost-share program to remove hazardous trees, provide professional pruning, and plan new plantings in public parks and rights-of-way.
Deputy City Manager Rodney Sadler told the council the program “really functions as a grant” and that this year’s eligibility is not limited to ash trees; other hazardous or declining trees may be addressed. Sadler listed targeted locations including North Park, Forest Lawn Cemetery (planning), McKinney Bark Park, JC Park and Brashear Park, and noted tree removals could occur throughout city rights-of-way.
Sadler said 90% of the total project cost would come from MDC and the city’s share would be roughly $4,900; some of the match may be provided as labor. He said the work would support the city’s Tree City USA designation by demonstrating annual commitment to managing the urban canopy.
Council members expressed appreciation for the program and for prior hazardous-tree work that benefited neighboring properties. The resolution authorizes the mayor and city manager to pursue the cost-share agreement; work locations and final scope will be identified by parks staff and the local forester and returned to council as required.
The council approved the resolution by voice vote.
