MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — City Council on Aug. 5 adopted a resolution authorizing the city to participate in the national settlement proposed with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family and to join the statewide distribution memorandum of understanding (the “1 Ohio MOU”).
City Manager Ashley Combs told council the statewide MOU anticipates a national settlement payment in the billions; Ohio’s allocation could be up to $198 million for state and local governments under the 1 Ohio framework, but the precise amount Middletown might receive is not yet determined. The resolution was passed on second reading as an emergency so the city could opt in before an announced September deadline.
Combs said opting out would make the city ineligible to receive any eventual settlement funds. Council voted unanimously to participate; staff said they will return with more details as the settlement terms are finalized and as the state allocates funds to local governments.
