Council approves five SROs for 2025–26 school year after negotiations with district

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — City Council voted Aug. 5 to approve renewing the School Resource Officer (SRO) agreement with Middletown City School District to provide five SROs for the 2025–26 school year.
Deputy or representative (Mister Ewing presented) explained the city will provide five officers; the school district will reimburse the city for 75% of the employment cost for four of the officers and 50% of one officer’s employment cost. The agreement covers officers assigned to schools during the academic year and reflects prior negotiations between city staff and the district.
Council member West said he supported maintaining five SROs, describing the decision as a public‑safety measure: “...my intentions weren’t to drive a wedge or anything between the city and the school. It was clearly one of public safety,” he said during council comments. Other council members likewise supported the renewal; the motion passed with unanimous recorded votes.
The agreement will put five officers in schools for the coming year under the cost‑sharing terms described; council did not specify additional policy changes to SRO roles during the Aug. 5 meeting.
