Council recognizes 46 junior leaders for 1,900 volunteer hours in summer playground program

City Council recognized 46 junior leaders in the summer playground program who contributed more than 1,900 volunteer hours this summer. Lisa Abernathy, recreation supervisor, introduced the group and described the program’s goals to prepare participants for paid leadership roles or future job opportunities.
"This program has been around for almost 39 years in the city, and each summer, it continues to grow," Lisa Abernathy told the council. She said junior leaders, ages 12 to 15, assisted paid staff, helped lead crafts and games, and also participated in activities.
The mayor and several council members offered remarks praising the young leaders. Council members encouraged the juniors to remain engaged in their neighborhoods and said the experience can lead to future civic participation. A list of named junior leaders was read during the presentation and council members invited the students to come forward to receive recognition.
The recognition was ceremonial; no council action was required.
