The Planning and Zoning Committee considered two items. Nichols Porter from the Division of Planning and Development presented a request to abandon about 400 feet of a 12‑foot‑wide unimproved public alley between South Third Street and Elm Avenue (near 1051 South Third Street). Porter said the northern portion of the alley had been fenced since at least 2019 and that neither the alley nor the right‑of‑way had been improved or regularly used. DPD and the Land Use Control Board recommended approval with standard conditions, including recording any required utility easements and completing the closure within three years. Applicant consultant Cindy Reeves said the abandonment would allow the two adjacent property owners to secure their properties and install proper fencing.
Councilman Edmond Ford Sr. spoke in favor of the closure but urged nearby businesses to clean and maintain abutting property that has become an eyesore. The committee approved the abandonment with the recommended conditions.
The committee also approved an honorary street name resolution proposed by Councilwoman Logan to honor Adrian Macklin, a music educator and Grammy‑nominee associated with Cordova High School. Council members noted Macklin’s work with local students and the committee cleared an honorary renaming of Berryhill Road between Chimney Rock Boulevard and the city limit.
