Hewitt — The City Council on Aug. 4 voted to set two public hearings on the fiscal 2025–26 proposed operating and capital budget and placed consideration of adoption of the city’s current tax rate on a future meeting agenda.
City Manager Thomas told council that certified property values received on July 25 produced updated revenue calculations. Using the city’s current adopted tax rate, 0.539082 per $100 of valuation, he said the certified values generate about $126,000 more property-tax revenue for the general fund than the preliminary figures used in the earlier proposed budget presentation.
Nut graf: By scheduling two public hearings (Aug. 11 and Aug. 18) and placing the adoption of the proposed tax rate on the Aug. 18 council agenda, the council set the public process and legal ceiling it will consider when finalizing the budget and tax rate.
During the meeting the council approved a motion to set a public hearing on Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. (City Hall, Council Chambers) for the proposed fiscal-year 2025–26 budget. The council also took the required recorded vote to place the adoption of the tax rate (0.539082 per $100) as an action item for the Aug. 18 council meeting and set a second public hearing on Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. Staff explained the vote only sets the ceiling for what the council may adopt and does not adopt a tax rate that night.
Thomas reviewed summary budget figures: an estimated beginning general-fund balance of about $10.8 million, revenues of roughly $16.7 million, and proposed expenses of roughly $16.8 million, yielding an estimated net decrease of about $83,000 for the year under the presented assumptions. He also noted interest revenue assumptions increased in the revised figures after certified values were received and that a library server purchase was covered by a grant secured by library staff.
Ending: The council approved setting the hearings and placing the tax-rate adoption on the Aug. 18 agenda by recorded motions; staff will publish legally required notices and continue budget work ahead of the hearings.
