The Caswell County Tourism Development Authority (TDA) presented its annual report to the Board of Commissioners on Aug. 4, saying visitors spent more than $19 million in the county last year — a 7.7% increase — and that the TDA awarded more than $31,000 in grants to 16 local businesses and organizations.
Angela Upchurch, who identified herself as mayor of Milton and the county’s TDA representative, said the TDA focused this year on rotating businesses into online and print advertising after completing a county branding effort the prior year. The TDA also reported social‑media promotion, a new rack card for regional visitor centers, trail signage purchases, contracted part‑time staff and a strategic plan.
Why it matters: Tourism dollars support local employers and small businesses. The TDA reported 92 jobs in Caswell tied to tourism and said ongoing grants and marketing aim to increase visitor spending and stays.
Highlights and programs: Upchurch noted a state Department of Commerce “Uplift” program filmed pro‑quality video ads for the county at no cost, and that the TDA hosted two free itinerary‑building workshops. The TDA plans a farm tour on Nov. 8 and continued promotion of farms and the weekly farmers market.
The TDA’s independent financial management has been moved to the county finance department for administration of the 3% occupancy tax that funds TDA activities, the presentation said.
Outcome: The presentation fulfilled the TDA’s annual reporting requirement to the board. Commissioners asked for hard copies of the report; TDA staff confirmed they would leave copies with the county finance office.
Ending: The TDA asked the board to continue supporting grant programs and marketing to build visitation and spending, particularly around farm‑tourism and local events.
