Health department schedules Aug. 16 back-to-school fair and begins Food Is Medicine cohort Aug. 23

Sherry, speaking for the health department, said last year’s health fair drew about 500 people and the department expects similar participation this year. The Food Is Medicine program is an 18-week program; Sherry described the first six weeks as focusing on cooking demonstrations, nutrition education and diabetes and blood-pressure-related education, followed by continued coaching and end-of-program biometrics to show changes in blood pressure and blood sugar.
Sherry said the program purchases food boxes and demonstration items from vendors in Greene County where possible and that Save A Lot has been an “excellent partner.” She also said the department hopes to secure insurance funding for the program in the future but did not say whether any insurers had committed funding.
