Board of Nursing APR Committee agrees to start rule change to accept national APRN-approved CNE

The APR Committee of the Board of Nursing voted by consensus to begin the state approval process for a draft revision to K.A.R. 60-9-106 that would allow continuing nursing education approved by national APRN certification bodies to be accepted for state purposes.

The change, presented in the committee packet (page 7), would add language so that continuing education offerings presented by or approved by national APRN certification bodies would be accepted by the Board’s continuing education review. Committee members said the revision reflects requests from both the APRN and CNE committees and would align state acceptance with nationally approved APRN continuing education.

Committee members reviewed the draft language highlighted in the packet and discussed that the text proposed by the APRN committee would make national approvals automatically acceptable for state purposes. The packet also included additional edits originating from the CNE committee. No committee member voiced opposition during the meeting; staff said they will route the draft through the formal approval process in the state.

The item will return to the committee after the state rulemaking steps have been initiated and staff have provided further updates. Committee members asked that interested advisory council members be notified so they can attend the September meeting if needed.
