McFarland reports steady summer-school participation, larger camp kindergarten and first Japan trip
Summary
District administrator reported that summer school participation held steady, camp kindergarten enrollment rose, the district completed a first-time Japan trip for students, and staff received several community recognitions.
"Most of summer school has concluded," the district administrator told the board, providing attendance and staffing summaries for summer offerings.
The district offered half-day summer sessions for students in grades 1–5 in June and July using a model that mirrors the regular school day. Attendance was 267 students in June and 246 in July; 21 teachers and additional educational assistants, office staff and one-on-one supports served those sessions. The administrator said the models fourth year of use helped continuity and that for the second year in a row the district was largely able to hire regular-year teachers for summer assignments.
Camp kindergarten ran two weeks and had 148 students this year, up from 124 last year; the administrator described the programs goal as familiarizing incoming kindergartners with buildings and pick-up/drop-off routines. The administrator estimated the size of the incoming kindergarten class at about 160 students.
The district also reported extended offerings for older students, including band and orchestra lessons and a similarly popular speed, power and acceleration (SPAS) athletics program that had five instructors and 327 student participants. The district said 56 students took part in a first-time trip to Japan and noted highlights such as visits to Peace Memorial Park.
Administrators thanked staff who organized and led the programs by name: Melissa Full and Carly Cherick (planning), Leah Lackey and Brooke Houser (camp-week administrators), and classroom aides and office staff who supported summer operations. The board also recognized community partners and events, including Bob's Coffee Shop and the McFarland Educational Foundation for event and branding support, and the Bill Garvey Memorial golf outing, which the board described as a large fundraiser that drew 136 golfers.
The administrator closed by reminding the board of upcoming district events: an Aug. 11 work session and an Aug. 16 bus-donation event at the high school from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The reports were presented as informational items; there were no formal board actions tied directly to program attendance or acknowledgements during the meeting.
