Board adopts municipal early-voting schedules and flyers; judge appointments set for Aug. 19

Elections director Claire presented the early-voting windows and said the board had copies of the flyers for Erwin and Lillington. For Erwin she listed the dates as Sept. 18 through Oct. 3, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday Oct. 4 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. For Andrews and Lillington (municipal elections on Nov. 4) she gave the early-voting dates as Oct. 16 through Oct. 31, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday Nov. 1 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The board voted to adopt the early-voting plan and to accept the color flyers for distribution. A motion to accept the flyers passed after a second; the board chair called the question and members said “Aye.”
Claire told the board that the Democratic and Republican parties will each submit lists of recommended judges for the two-year term and that the director and office staff will compile those lists and present them at the Aug. 19 meeting for board review and approval. She also said the board must meet Sept. 2 to appoint early-voting officials for sites held outside the elections office; parties must submit names five days before the meeting and the office will give parties 21 days’ notice of that appointment meeting.
Why it matters: approving an early-voting plan and outreach materials is a routine but necessary step to ensure voters know when and where they can vote in municipal contests. The appointments of judges and early-voting officials set the pool of people who will staff polling places and early-vote sites.
Board members asked that the flyers be displayed on the scribe/screen during meetings for public visibility; Claire agreed to provide them to party chairs and post them on county channels.
