Court adds contingency for radio-system and shelter HVAC maintenance while awaiting system go-live

A county communications official told commissioners during the July 12 budget workshop that the county's radio system had not reached full operational status at the start of the fiscal year and that some budgeted training and service categories should be adjusted accordingly. The official said training originally scheduled for October had been pushed to January and that the department had budgeted for a full year of service that has not yet been realized. For building and grounds repair and maintenance related to shelters, the official said staff added funds for a maintenance service contract: "I added $50,000 because we're going to have to get a maintenance service contract on the air conditioning unit in the 4 shelters. 5 shelters that we have...and I haven't gotten quotes on it yet. I just put it in there for 15,000." The official noted they had not yet obtained quotes and that the number was preliminary. Commissioners discussed eliminating vague miscellaneous line items and moving toward more specific categories so the county has clearer, auditable line items. The court accepted the recommendation to remove or reduce miscellaneous funds in departments where few personnel changes or expenditures are expected, and commissioners noted that any department can return to the court to request additional funding if needed.
