Superintendent details school openings, transportation and athletic facility work

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. — Superintendent Dr. Langford told the Sumner County Education Committee on Aug. 4 that the first day of school proceeded smoothly and offered a detailed facilities and operations update covering transportation, meal service and athletic projects across the district.
Langford said the district serves about 22,000 meals per day and that its buses together drive the equivalent of nine round trips to Disney every school day. He praised transportation staff and said the system was operating despite driver vacancies and short-term medical leaves.
He provided project-by-project updates: Hendersonville High School’s stadium work continues, with the press box repaired after cosmetic damage during delivery; Station Camp High School had sod installed and the final asphalt course scheduled; Portland’s work is complete with two middle school games scheduled; Gallatin has ongoing storm drainage work and partial stone base and binder course work for parking areas; Marriott Magnet’s tennis courts and field materials passed proof rolling and additional field material may be needed. He also said lighting for Merrill Hyde Soccer Field is currently not operational because the previous health department building housed the circuit powering those lights; he added the district owns the land under the old health department building.
Langford noted temporary issues with stadium lighting color settings at several venues and said the vendor has corrected the color programming. He also described consolidation of all pre-K classrooms into the former Edu Wilson building in Gallatin and the installation of a new playground.
No formal committee action was taken on any facility item during the meeting; the superintendent provided these as operational updates. Committee member Mr. Wright urged the public to visit North Summer school to see recent window and site work.
