Director reports smooth school start, transportation strain and progress on athletic facilities

The Summer County School District began the school year with what the director of schools described as a largely smooth opening, even as transportation demand and several construction projects remain active. Dr. Lamers, director of schools, said the district sold about 22,000 meals a day and noted heavy early bus operations: "Buses drive the equivalent of nine round trips to Disney every day, and they were up this morning about 5 a.m.," he said, praising the transportation team: "They're really phenomenal." He said the district owns the land under the old health department and noted crews had to address several logistical issues during installations. Facilities work described included placing a binder course of asphalt with final asphalt scheduled for the following day, installing concrete in key areas, laying sod after a run of wet weather and finishing press-box cosmetics. Lamers also noted consolidated pre-K classrooms in the former Ed Wilson building in Gallatin and the addition of a new playground.
