Board approves purchase of Bobcat compact loader, trade-in and funding transfer to follow

The Board of Public Works and Safety on Aug. 4 approved moving forward with the purchase of a 2025 Bobcat compact track loader and authorized trading in a 2001 CAT telehandler, with the purchase and transfer of funds to be formalized at the next meeting. Fleet manager and street commissioner Brett Jones said the city will forego a lease option and buy the equipment outright under a Sourcewell contract; the board approved the purchase "subject to identification of and approval of funding." He said the trade-in value for the existing telehandler was about $13,000 and that the net purchase price after the trade would be paid once funds are moved from the sewer fund to the wastewater treatment 400 series at the next meeting. Mayor Barnett and other board members explained staff concluded the lease terms included unfavorable fees and did not produce substantial savings compared with an outright purchase. "We weren't getting a whole lot of savings by leasing it," the mayor said, and the board determined purchasing outright would be more fiscally responsible. The board voted to authorize the purchase and trade-in and instructed staff to transfer funds at the next meeting so the purchase can be completed. Staff said the transfer is a board-level action and can be completed at one subsequent meeting, after which the vendor will be paid and the trade processed.
