Committee says cleanup of vacated Gallatin courthouse is slow; calls for planning and public discussion of reuse

Sumner County commissioners said Aug. 4 they have begun clearing the vacated Gallatin courthouse at 100 Public Square but that a full inventory and cleanout remain underway and discussions about future use should happen in public committee settings. Committee members said departments that stored items in the old courthouse have generally agreed to move material but that the county must decide whether to transfer items to other departments, sell through the surplus (GovDeals) process, or prepare the building for renovation. The group reported some departments (elections, maintenance, planning and IT) have been cleaning out their holdings and that staff have used the county’s interdepartmental surplus policy to retain needed items when requested by other departments. Commissioners said the building will require removal of nonoriginal finishes (drop ceilings, paneling, carpets) and a full conditions assessment before the county can identify the highest and best use. Suggestions discussed informally during the meeting included leasing to outside tenants, rehousing court-related offices, or developing a multiuse civic space; commissioners emphasized the need for a space planner to develop options and cost estimates once the building is cleared to its structural elements. The committee pledged to keep the courthouse on its agenda while staff complete the cleanout and to present options to the public and the full commission once analyses are available. No sale or lease decisions were made at the Aug. 4 meeting.
